從注重圖像所呈現出的語彙一直到近期林安常將重點放在材質的處理與表現上，作品內容與形式所造成畫面上的差異性一直是他所關注的焦點，也透過不同的關於凸顯木材質的技法，讓一些傳統常使用的方法能縮小在藝術家的作品中，讓畫面能更加接近他所關心的事物，也透過自身的創作反省這片土地上所乘載過的記憶與痕跡。
長期關注人類如何介入自然，以及自然又如何反過來改變人類的生活環境。這樣的觀察延伸至創作之中，透過視覺語彙的重組與形體的重構，讓看似對立的兩種世界在作品中相互滲透。動物象徵自然的柔軟與流動，幾何結構與榫卯痕跡則暗示人類理性與工藝的介入；植物的形象則成為自我處身於兩者之間的象徵，如同生命在夾縫中生長，既順應又反抗。
木材，作為主要媒材，既是自然的贈禮，也是一種被人為加工與再塑的存在。在雕鑿的過程中，藝術家思索「人手」與「自然形態」之間的張力，透過不同的刀痕、肌理與結構，模擬建築佇立於自然中的樣貌。這些層層堆疊的痕跡，既是時間的印記，也象徵著人與自然共存的痕跡。
作品呈現的，不僅是一種形式上的對話，更是一種對存在狀態的思辨——關於人工如何從自然中誕生，又如何不斷試圖回歸自然。在感性與理性的交錯之間，藝術家以木為語言，描繪出一個介於真實與想像之間的世界，邀請觀者在觀看的過程中，重新感受我們所身處的「生活之境」。
From the words presented by images to the texture and expressions that AN CHANG have focused on recently, the differences on the vision that caused by works’ contents and forms are principal he always focus on.
AN CHANG also concentrates some traditional techniques in his art works, to let the visions closer to the things he cares on, through emphasizing the texture of woods in various measures.
At last, he has examined his memories and impressions which demonstrated the land’s tracks by creation.
The artist’s practice revolves around the ways humans intervene in nature, and how nature, in turn, transforms human environments. This ongoing observation extends into his creative process, where visual symbols and structural forms are reassembled to blur the boundaries between two seemingly opposing worlds. Animals embody the gentleness and fluidity of nature, while geometric structures and joinery marks allude to human logic and craftsmanship. The presence of plants becomes a metaphor for the self — situated between nature and construction — growing in the in-between spaces, both adapting and resisting.
Wood, as the primary medium, serves as both a gift of nature and a material shaped by human intention. Through carving, the artist contemplates the tension between the hand and the organic form. Each mark, texture, and surface reveals traces of coexistence — of how built structures stand amidst the natural world, and how human gestures leave their imprints upon it.
These works are not only visual dialogues but also meditations on existence — on how the artificial emerges from nature, and how it endlessly seeks to return.Between sensibility and reason, the artist uses wood as a language to construct a world suspended between reality and imagination, inviting viewers to rediscover the “landscape of living” that surrounds us all.
