to mend a horse

WANG AYMEI Solo Exhibition

“Ben zi bena, bluot zi bluoda, lid zi geliden, sose gelimida sin. »

“Ben zi bena, bluot zi bluoda, lid zi geliden, sose gelimida sin.”

“Blood to blood, bone to bone, joint to joint, so may they be bound together.”

This fragment is the last verse of the second Merseburg charm. The Merseburg charms are two 9th century pagan incantations written in Old High German. Together, they present in turn, the paradoxical nature of a rope, at times an instrument of oppression, at times one for healing.

The first Merseburg charm is called a “loosening charm”. A blessing of release, it invokes the story of war prisoners breaking free from their shackles. The second charm is a “binding charm”. A healing spell, here the rope is meant to bind together parts that were separated and mend them. In the original tale, the sister of the rider sings it to heal a foal which has injured its leg. It is well known that, for a horse, a broken leg usually translates to a death sentence. Furthermore, the English idiom, “to break a horse”, often invokes ideas of breaking the animal’s spirit to subjugate and dominate it.

I thought the English name of the exhibition, “to mend a horse”, could act as a counter-idiom in the spirit of the Merseburg charms; and as most of us with access to the news, are powerless yet witnesses to the increasing list of conflicts, wars, and disasters breaking out or worsening in recent years, let the spoken charm be solidarity—if only symbolically, let them be the wish to heal what has been broken, and release what has been besieged.

Themes of mending and scarring; skin and borders; restraint and release, have been present for a few years in my paintings. The earliest in this exhibition, dates back to the covid pandemic, when lockdown prevented us from going out to buy more materials. I began sewing canvases out of the discarded shreds of previous paintings. A bit à la Frankenstein, a painting made from the remains of other paintings, it felt like grafting my paintings into their own genealogy. Thus came the focus on the material body of painting, the dependence of the image to its support, and the idea of origins. This line of exploration later extended to my own identity, and the discrepancy between my physical body and my cultural heritage. The next series of works, which make the heart of this exhibition, are from a series titled “corps de frontières” (borders within). Slowly, from a self-inquiry, the themes shifted to the question and relation between skin, bodies, the land, and the territory. I began working on the series in 2023, and as the urgency of events later that year dictated, themes of war, frontiers and displacement informed the following works.

In parallel, archeology and rituals have long been a source of inspiration in my practice. Seven years ago, upon traveling to Xi’an, I thought I was visiting for the Terracotta Army. But what really stayed vividly with me all these years, instead of the soldiers, it was the sight of the broken horses. Undergoing restoration, presumably, held together by ropes, this line of headless, limbless, broken horses, a sacrifice in the mausoleum, but also symbol of freedom being at once restored and detained made a lasting impression on me. In the following years, I often returned to this vision as a psychological image of a paradox, a blockade, or pressure.

Choosing the Merseburg charms as the entry point of this solo exhibition helped me attach this orphaned series into a more cohesive ensemble, and present together this constellation of artworks.
