VISIBLE and INVISIBLE

“Visible and Invisible”

                                           ——Note of Creation

“Seeing the thing-in-itself, the world is the one thing that we’ve seen”, said Merleau-Ponty, the French philosopher. Indeed, the world is what we’ve seen. However, is that the world we’ve seen and believed really the true, undoubted and objective world? Not exactly. In Zen Buddhism, “visible” equals to “have”, “invisible” equals to “emptiness”. Unattainable illusions, mystifications are also the experiences we usually have had. “Visible and invisible” in philosophy is the eternal macro proposition.

In the world under “view”, visibility and invisibility are always exist; in perceivable world, known and unknown are always exist. And obviously, the “visibility” and “invisibility” are not opposite, tearing, they interlace and transfer constantly depending on time, space, humans’ situation and frame of mind. The perspective we used to see the things have kept changing. We often have kind of experiences: having different feels when revisit the same place; losing previous taste of the same food…, etc. We used to represent “visibility” through “watching” and acquire “known” through “sense of perceivable”.

But actually, the “watching” and “sense of perceivable” have suffered from lots of limitations, such as personal experience, knowledge, external influence, time, space, situation and frame of mind…, all affecting our perspectives and sense of perceivable, causing our each time of “watching” being unilateral and partial. The part of “invisible” and “unknown” could be out of imagination.

The unexpectedly global epidemic in 2020, led us to the empathy. Each of us experiences the time of isolation, looking out the window segregated by glass. The world outside has became invisible and hard to known. It’s an isolated period and also a nice time to look ourselves. During this kind of time, I created a virtual tiny space of my own paintings, using mirror, glass, gauze, lace and window frame to build 3D space basing on 2D plane, and represented the “visibility” and “invisibility” of outside world and my perspective.

The silent vision, representing through virtual, dreamlike, and poetic, is a door, a window, a silent thinking space or a sanctuary that I have created and opened for myself and audiences.

“Visibility” equals to known and past, and “Invisibility” equals to expectation and future.
