【 墨形 Formation of Ink 】陳修橋 個展 CHEN XIU-QIAO SOLO EXHIBITION

墨形

Formation of Ink

Follow the last exhibition “Formation of Love”, I used betta as a symbol of letters with “missives” in Chinese classical literatures. I expressed my personal emotion in ways like reshaping fish tails or opposing objects, some adapting natural symbols; some using feelings from points and lines to planes; some being the instinctive reflection from body and face; trying to represent “love” by different styles.

After the past two years, I found the lines that been left from carving and sawing, and the main structures when picturing drafts shared some similar logics with writing Chinese calligraphy. Therefore, I started to research the relevance between sculpture and Chinese calligraphy.

There are various techniques when writing Chinese calligraphy, for example, controlling the density of water and ink, transferring the strength when writing and leaving the blanks with a sense of aesthete, all of them represent a kind of rhythm and spirit while finish the writing. To me, the stroke of sculpture like point, lines, planes, positive or negative spaces are similar with clarity, relaxation and a purpose of relieving the subject under painting and photography. But the biggest challenge for me is expressing my original 2D concept in 3D form while maintaining the same spirit.

In this current exhibition “Formation of Ink”, I present the concept above again, mixing the perspectives of Chinese calligraphy and painting in my sculptures, and declare a start of transferring from signs to style by letters in the meantime. The modeling and rhythm are the main parts of this collection; it focus on “shape” rather than researches of meaning in order to broaden the dimension for my future creation. Basing on these perspectives, I considered how to contain the possibilities of hard and soft, abstract and concrete at the same time. On the concrete portion, I can bring direct feelings to audiences by expressing body language on works just like my former works in college; on the abstract portion, lines and planes can emphasize the feelings to achieve the content that I try to convey. As “Formation of Love”, which I researched before, it is writing letters that fulfills the meaning I want to represent.

CHEN XIU-QIAO

Chen Xiu-qiao grew up in Hualien, a city surrounded by mountains and seas. These natural sceneries later became one of the element he used to depict emotions. In the process of studying in the Department of Sculpture at National University of the Arts, after he played with various materials, he decided to continue work with wood materials. During the university, he also studied through the structure of the human body, attempting to express emotional feelings. He hopes to record those unspeakable emotions from the body.
