【形碎之間 Between Form and Fragment】黃路玉苓新秀個展

【Between Form and Fragment】Huang Lu Yu-Ling Solo Exhibition

Curator:Verena Chen

“ With what identity we face the society / Self and identify ourselves / world”, which is the life inquiry of the artist Huang Lu, Yu-Ling. She is trying to explore the coexistent but still blurry interrelationship among self, others and the society. Curator Verena Chen picks up the theory of “ Self formation” from Jacques Lacan, French psycho-analyst to penetrate the artist’s concern on the mirror image and personal identity and the names the exhibition【Between Form and Fragment】. “Form” is the real shape from an ‘ego’ ideal image as well as the blurry and fragmental appearance in personal remembrance of the things and beings; “ Fragment” indicates repeated deconstruction of  the self and the disintegration of memory with time ; “Between” symbolizes the artist’s confusion and uncertainty about self identification, wandering between the space of inward and outward border. Roving between Form (reconstruction) and Fragment(deconstruction) becomes the artist’s endless loop of Mobius strip
Multiple layers of ink and color float and render freely on the lines and outlines which joins the alum powder or not; whitewash mixed with mineral pigment stays the mottled texture on paper. Time seems to accumulate and elapse, the clear shape blurs by degrees, the familiar faces begin to vary and the surrounding scenery is about to go far. However, the hazy aura is so ambiguous that attracts viewers to lift the secret thin layer to read the emotional messages that the artist would like to express. There are two kinds of expressive ways in her works. One is to portray the vague figures and the other is to depict the sense of self-identity which is garnered from others’ existence through her repeating but not copying mold. We can often see two twin girls in her works. They can be regarded as the artist and her elder sister, sharing the same blood, growing up in the same environment. In the course of developing, they identify themselves from each other. According to the psychology, self-concept mostly forms and develops through “mirror image of the self”, getting along with the important others. From Lacan’s viewpoint, the I from the mirror is not real and it is only an image in the mirror. Huang Lu, Yu-Ling ruminates her personal experiences and identifies herself by means of the existence of her sister. Even so, sentimental entanglement and alienation throughout the life is like a web too complicated to break away. Maybe for Huang Lu, working on art is the only manner to have an effective expression and salvation when ego is always in the obscure and incomplete status. With the interaction of ink and mineral pigment, Huang Lu creates her work by construction, destruction, and reconstruction. In her translucent fancy picture, those unseen parts seem to come into sight.
Art is like a mirror. Artists examine themselves to the deepest level in the process of producing artworks. When the artist steps back to the naked status, wandering, creation itself is representing the artist’s life imprint.
